Am I drinking too much alcohol?
Over the last few years, there has been so much upheaval and anxiety, we have started doing things we didn’t do before. One of the issues I have seen people struggling with lately is increased drinking.
Firstly, well done for reading this article. Here are some ideas that may indicate to you that you are drinking too much alcohol.
Is drinking impacting your life?
Is drinking alcohol impacting your life and/or causing issues, with family or friends? Are you having trouble working or getting work done? Do you wake up feeling like you have got to get through another long day? These are all signs that things may not be going great for you right now.
Ask yourself…
- Has my drinking become a habit?
- Can I catch myself before I start drinking?
- Am I drinking alcohol because you are bored and filling in time, then you are drinking too much?
- Is drinking a way of coping, then you are drinking too much.
- Am I being the best parent, you can be because of our drinking, then you are drinking too much.
- Do I and my partner or family fight because of my drinking, then you are drinking too much.
- Has the quality of my work gone downhill because of my drinking, then you are drinking too much.
- Have I stopped doing things I used to enjoy because it cuts into my drinking time, then you’re drinking too much?
So really, if you feel that you are drinking too much or more than you have before then the chances are, for you, you are drinking too much.
How can I reduce my alcohol drinking?
The first action to take is to reduce or delay how much you are drinking. It might be one less drink per night or having your first drink an hour later. If that goes okay, can you get back to doing something that you enjoyed before? That might be going for a walk, meeting a friend for a safe coffee, or taking the kids out to the park.
Medicating your issues or how you feel with alcohol is a short-term fix that can have long-term consequences. Problems do not go away with drinking.
Stopping or reducing your drinking is about having tools and strategies in place so you feel okay without a drink. It is about understanding things in your life so you can be the person that you want to be without as much alcohol.
Things in life can be scary but we can work through that, and I can support you to feel more okay with what you are trying to accomplish.
