How can I leave work at work?

Articles | 1 comment

Work comes home with me, my frustration, my bad mood and then the people I love the most get affected, what can I do? Can I call Redcliffe Counselling?

Back in the 1920s Coal Miners won the right to shower so they could wash off the coal dust of their job at work before they went home. This is one of many ideas that I have used to leave work at work. Here are some more ideas, have a read and I invite you to reflect on what you could try.

  1. Having a shower, you will need to have alternate clothes with you and a towel. If it is possible, try it.
  2. I have a routine at the end of each day. Shutting down my computer, putting my name tag in my desk drawer. To me these says I am finished work, I am no longer client facing Tanya, I am finished for the day.
  3. Turn on some great songs to sing to as I drive home. Any KISS music but especially singing along to “I wanna rock and roll all night” is a wonderful way to set the scene for feeling free.
  4. Dance, pick a song you like or pick a song that the lyrics reflect what you are trying to do. “Shake it off” by Taylor Swift could work a treat.
  5. Put your work gear (if applicable) away and out of sight.
  6. My exercise is walking, and I plan to get home, change clothes, and go for a walk. Even a short walk helps me shift from work head to home head.
  7. Set boundaries about work contacting you after work hour. Have a pre-set ‘phone on silent’ there is a setting for that in your phone to turn this on and off.
  8. Be available to be the opposite you. If work is busy and noisy, find quiet peaceful time and/or pursuits. If work is a solo isolated role, get out with friends at a trivia night, dinner, movie, sport etc.

What can I do?

If you are feeling ready to reduce or stop your job coming home with you and you are ready to talk to someone about that then I have the experience to support you while you work towards your best outcomes.
